When I talk to other dudes about being vegan, they’re mildly astonished. Usually, they’re on board with a vegan or vegetarian meal every now and then, but they don’t understand how I do it all the time. How have I not withered away from a shortage of calories?
The answer?
Here are 5 foods that help me make it work.
Bagels, bread, tortillas
Yes, carbs. You should eat carbs. I always have these on hand to make a quick meal or snack, whether it’s a bagel, tacos, burritos, or toast.
Plant-Based Spreads
You need some goodness to put on bagels or toast or anything, really. Think avocado, tahini, peanut butter, almond butter, sunflower butter, lentil dip. I put spoon-fulls of PB in my oats every morning and at least half an avocado in nearly everything else.
Nuts & Seeds
Pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, walnuts, cashews, etc. I throw a handful into almost everything. It gives everything a little extra crunch and a calorie boost to boot.
Bars
My go-to snack. I dig PROBARs and Larabars. When I have time, I make my own. Check ’em out:

Smoothies
Smoothies are great because they allow you to make a lot of healthy calories very quick to eat and digest. Check out our dude-worthy plant-based smoothie recipes:
