Sometimes Kayli and I (reluctantly) go to morning workout classes. I say “reluctantly” not because we aren’t early birds (alarm sounds at 530AM every day), but because we adore our habit of slow mornings. On morning exercise days, we forgo our glorious, slow morning routine of coffee-sipping and book-reading in exchange for a jarring, heart-pounding, rather intense start to the day. It’s not all bad – we get our weights session or yoga “out of the way” and feel much better as we sit at our desks throughout the workday. Trade-offs are real, friends.
During our normal morning routine, our food intake is as slow as our bodies are moving. First, green juice. Second, contemplative sips of java and a book. Third, warm up some crockpot oats or overnight oats.
On morning exercise days, there’s no time for any of that slow business, so we throw the coffee in a to-go mug and throw this Fat Green Smoothie together in the blender. It’s quick enough to get us out the door on time and hearty enough to fuel even the toughest workouts. The oats add bulk, and the hemp seeds add protein.
- ½ cup old-fashioned oats (uncooked)
- ½ cup frozen spinach
- ½ cup frozen mango
- 1 banana
- ½ lime, peeled (or just the juice squeezed in)
- 2 tbsp hemp seeds
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
- 1 cup unsweetened soy milk
- water (about ½ - 1 cup)
- small handful of fresh cilantro
- dash of cayenne
- ¼ tsp turmeric
- ¼ tsp powdered ginger
- Combine all ingredients in a blender, and add enough water to help it blend smoothly. Blend until completely smooth, adding more water or milk if needed.
