The shift of seasons is already a weird time (is it too early for butternut squash soup? is it too late for peach cobbler? are shorts and long sleeves a weird combo?), but add travel to that and things get weirder. Over the past month, I’ve bounced from the Midwest, to Souther Cali, to New England. Three timezones, three climates, and one suitcase. I came home a little confused about the current season. It was still very much summer when I left STL, and even hotter and sunnier in Cali. Autumn was in full swing on the East Coast, and the leaves were showing the very first hints of change when I landed back in STL.
This Pumpkin Berry Smoothie Bowl is a tribute to the shifting seasons. It’s warm enough for chilled breakfasts and the memories of summer berries are fresh. But my mind is preparing for change. The hint of pumpkin is a nod to what’s ahead.
How do you handle change? Love it? Resist it? I used to resist it, but have now come to welcome it. Life is like a river, the scenery is always changing, it’s forever flowing onward. Suffering comes from wishing it to be otherwise, happiness comes from accepting the constant change and staying present in each moment. One of my favorite guided meditations, Everything Changes, gets at this very concept. Enjoy!
- ½ cup pumpkin puree
- ½ cup frozen mango
- ½ cup frozen strawberries
- ½ banana
- ½ tsp pumpkin spice
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- 1 cup unsweetened soy/nut/rice milk
- 1 tbsp walnuts
- 1 tbsp hemp seeds
- In a blender, combine pumpkin puree, mango, strawberries, banana, pumpkin spice, turmeric, and ‘milk’. Blend until smooth. Pour into a bowl and top with walnuts and hemp seeds.
